His saying, the Exalted: "Indeed, when it was said to them: 'There is no god but Allah,' they were arrogant."

18171 - Abu Ubayd Allah ibn Akhi ibn Wahb narrated to us, my uncle narrated to us, al-Layth narrated to us, from Ibn Musafir (meaning Abd al-Rahman ibn Khalid), from Ibn Shihab, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they say: 'There is no god but Allah.' Whoever says: 'There is no god but Allah,' has protected his wealth and his life from me, except for its right (i.e., by law), and his reckoning is with Allah." And Allah sent down in His Book, mentioning a people who were arrogant, saying: "Indeed, when it was said to them: 'There is no god but Allah,' they were arrogant."

18172 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salamah Musa ibn Isma'il narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, from Sa'id al-Jurayri, from Abu al-Ala, who said: The Jews will be brought on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them: "What did you use to worship?" They will say: "We used to worship Allah and the Messiah." It will be said to them: "Go to the left." Then the polytheists will be brought, and it will be said to them: "There is no god but Allah," and they will show arrogance. Then it will be said to them: "There is no god but Allah," and they will show arrogance. Then it will be said to them: "There is no god but Allah," and they will show arrogance. It will be said to them: "Go to the left." Abu Nadrah said: "They will depart faster than birds." Abu al-Ala said: "Then the Muslims will be brought, and it will be said to them: 'What did you use to worship?' They will say: 'We used to worship Allah.' It will be said to them: 'Do you recognize Him if you see Him?' They will say: 'Yes.' It will be said to them: 'How do you recognize Him while you have not seen Him?' They will say: 'We know that He has no equal.' He said: 'Then He will reveal Himself to them, Blessed and Exalted is He, and Allah will save the believers.'"

18173 - From Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they say: 'There is no god but Allah.' Whoever says: 'There is no god but Allah,' has protected his wealth and his life from me, except for its right, and his reckoning is with Allah." And Allah sent down in His Book, mentioning a people who were arrogant, saying: "Indeed, when it was said to them: 'There is no god but Allah,' they were arrogant." And He said: "When those who disbelieved had put into their hearts pride—the pride of the time of ignorance. But Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers and adhered them to the word of righteousness, and they were more deserving of it and worthy of it." And it is: "There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." The polytheists were arrogant toward it on the day of al-Hudaybiyyah, the day the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, made a treaty with them regarding the terms of the truce.
