that Allah commanded you to do that.' He said: 'By Allah, if Allah commanded me, I will surely do it.' He said: So he left him and despaired of being obeyed. When Abraham took Isaac to slaughter him, and Isaac submitted, Allah pardoned him and ransomed him with a great sacrifice. He said: 'Rise, O my son, for Allah has pardoned you.' And Allah inspired Isaac—[the text then portrays the devil] appearing in the likeness of a friend of his, and he said to him: 'O Abraham, where are you headed?' He said: 'For some need.' He said: 'By Allah, you are not going out except to slaughter your son because of a vision you saw, but visions may be mistaken or correct, and there is nothing in a vision you saw that necessitates killing Isaac.' When he saw that he gained no benefit from Abraham, he met Isaac and said: 'Where are you headed, O Isaac?' He said: 'For a need of Abraham.' He said: 'Abraham is only taking you to slaughter you.' Isaac said: 'What concern is it of his to slaughter me, and have you ever seen anyone slaughter his own son?' He said: 'He is slaughtering you for Allah.' He said: 'If he slaughters me for Allah, I will be patient; by Allah, He is worthy of that.' When he saw that he gained no benefit from Isaac, he went to Sarah and said: 'Where is Isaac going?' She said: 'He went with Abraham for his need.' He said: 'He only took him to slaughter him.' She said: 'Have you ever seen anyone slaughter his own son?' He said: 'He is slaughtering him for Allah.' She said: 'If he slaughters him for Allah, then both Abraham and Isaac belong to Allah, and by Allah, He is worthy of that.' When he saw that he gained no benefit from them, he came to the Jamrah, and he swelled up until he blocked the valley. The angel was with Abraham, and the angel said: 'Throw, O Abraham.' So he threw seven pebbles, saying the takbir after each pebble, and the path was cleared for him. Then he proceeded until he reached the second Jamrah, and he swelled up until he blocked the valley. The angel said to him: 'Throw, O Abraham.' So he threw seven pebbles, saying the takbir after each pebble, and the path was cleared for him. Then he proceeded until he reached the third Jamrah, and he swelled up until he blocked the valley against him. The angel said to him: 'Throw, O Abraham.' So he threw seven pebbles, saying the takbir after each pebble, and the path was cleared for him until he reached the place of slaughter.
18237 - From al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, he said: The slaughtered one is Isaac.
18238 - And I heard my father say: The correct view is that the slaughtered one is Ishmael, peace be upon him. He said: And it is narrated from Ali, Ibn Umar, Abu Hurayrah, Abu al-Tufayl, Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, al-Hasan, Mujahid, al-Sha'bi, Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi, Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ali, and Abu Salih that they said: The slaughtered one is Ishmael.
