18239 - From Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "And when they had both submitted [to the will of Allah]" (Qur'an 37:103). He said: "This one submitted himself to Allah, and this one submitted his son to Allah." And "he put him down upon his forehead" (Qur'an 37:103) means he laid him upon his face.
18240 - From Abu Salih, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "And when they had both submitted," he said: "They agreed upon one matter." And "he put him down upon his forehead," he said: "He laid him down upon his forehead."
18241 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, regarding His saying: "And he put him down upon his forehead," he said: "He threw him down."
18242 - From Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice" (Qur'an 37:107). He said: "A ram that had grazed in Paradise for forty autumns."
18243 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, he said: "The rock at Mina, at the base of Thabir, is the one upon which Abraham, peace be upon him, slaughtered [in order to sacrifice] his son Isaac. A ram descended upon him from Thabir, having large eyes, horns, and a bleat. It is the same ram that the son of Adam offered, which was accepted from him, and it was stored in Paradise until he ransomed Isaac, peace be upon him, with it."
18244 - From al-Hasan, he said: "The name of Abraham's ram was Jarir."
18245 - My father narrated to us, Abu Nu'aym narrated to us, Sufyan al-Thawri narrated to us, from Dawud, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas: "And We gave him glad tidings of Isaac, a prophet among the righteous" (Qur'an 37:112). He said: "He was given glad tidings of him when he was born and when he was made a prophet."
18246 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, regarding His saying: "And We gave him glad tidings of Isaac," he said: "Glad tidings of prophethood. He was given glad tidings of him twice: when he was born and when he was made a prophet."
18247 - From Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "And We gave him glad tidings of Isaac, a prophet," he said: "He was given glad tidings of him after that as a prophet, after this happened to him when he offered himself for Allah. 'And We blessed him and Isaac, but among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly evident wrongdoer to himself' (Qur'an 37:113), meaning a believer and a disbeliever. And regarding His saying: 'And We did certainly bestow favor upon Moses and Aaron. And We saved them and their people from the great affliction' (Qur'an 37:114-115), meaning from Pharaoh and his people. 'And We gave them the explicit Scripture' (Qur'an 37:117), he said: The Torah. 'And We guided them on the straight path' (Qur'an 37:118), he said: Islam. 'And We left for them [favorable mention] among the later generations' (Qur'an 37:119), he said: Allah preserved good praise for them among the later generations."
18248 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, regarding His saying: "Do you call upon Ba'l?" (Qur'an 37:125), he said: "An idol."
18249 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Shaybah al-Wasiti narrated to us, Yazid narrated to us, Sharik narrated to us, from 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, that he saw a man driving a cow and said: "Who is the ba'l (owner/lord) of this?" Then he called him and asked: "Where are you from?" He replied: "From the people of Yemen." He said: "It is a language [dialect]; you call upon Ba'l, meaning a lord."
18250 - From al-Dahhak, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: A man passed by saying: "Who knows the cow?" A man said: "I am its ba'l (owner)." Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said to him: "Do you claim that you are the husband of the cow?" The man said: "Have you not heard the word of Allah: 'Do you call upon Ba'l and leave the best of creators?' (Qur'an 37:125), meaning you call upon Ba'l, while I am your Lord?" Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said to him: "You have spoken the truth."
18251 - From Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "Do you call upon Ba'l," he said: "A lord, in the language of the tribe of Azd Shanu'ah."
18252 - From Zayd ibn Aslam, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "Do you call upon Ba'l," he said: "An idol of theirs that they used to worship in Ba'labakk, which is behind Damascus, and the Ba'l they used to worship was there."
His saying: "Peace be upon Elias" (Qur'an 37:130).
18253 - From al-Dahhak, that he read: "Peace be upon the family of Yasin," and he said: "It is like Ilyas (Elias), like 'Isa (Jesus), al-Masih (the Messiah), Muhammad, Ahmad, Isra'il, and Ya'qub (Jacob)."
18254 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, regarding His saying: "Peace be upon Elias," he said: "We are the family of Muhammad, the family of Yasin."
His saying: "Except an old woman among those who remained" (Qur'an 37:135).
18255 - From al-Suddi, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "Except an old woman among those who remained," he said: "Those who perished." "And indeed, you pass by them" (Qur'an 37:137), he said: "In your travels."
