raised his head from the water about three cubits. He went to throw himself, but the whale met him. When he leaned towards it to let it take him, he turned to the other side, but the whale had met him [there as well]. When Jonah, peace be upon him, saw that, he knew it was a command from Allah, so he cast himself [into the water], and the whale took him before he passed onto the water. Allah revealed to the whale: "Do not digest a bone for him and do not eat any of his flesh, until I command My command with such-and-such..." until it pressed him against the clay, and he heard the glorification (tasbih) of the earth. That was when he called out. (1)
18278 - From Anas, he said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "When Jonah, peace be upon him, cast himself into the sea, the whale swallowed him. It dived with him until it reached a deep cavity in the earth, or a word resembling it. He heard the glorification of the earth, so he called out in the darkness: 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.' The supplication came hovering around the Throne. The angels said: 'O our Lord, we hear a faint voice from a land of exile.' He said: 'Do you know who that is?' They said: 'No, O our Lord.' He said: 'That is My servant Jonah.' They said: 'The one for whom we would always raise up accepted deeds and an answered supplication?' He said: 'Yes.' They said: 'O our Lord, will You not have mercy on what he used to do during ease, and save him during adversity?' He said: 'Yes.' So He commanded the whale, and it protected him.' (2)
18279 - From Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, [he said] that when it cast him out, it cast him out by the base of a gourd tree, which is the pumpkin. It cast him out in the form of a young boy, and he would seek shade under its shadow. Allah prepared for him a female wild animal that would come to him morning and evening, spread its legs, and he would drink from its milk until his flesh grew. (3)
18280 - From Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: Jonah, peace be upon him, had promised his people the punishment and informed them that it would come to them in three days. They separated every mother from her child, then they fell down and cried out to Allah and sought His forgiveness, so Allah withheld the punishment from them. The next morning, Jonah, peace be upon him, awaited the punishment, but he did not see anything. It was [the custom] that whoever lied without having proof was to be killed. So he departed in anger until he came to a people in a ship. They carried him, and they recognized him. When he entered the ship, it stood still, while the other ships were moving right and left. He said: 'What is the matter with your ship?' They said: 'We do not know!' He said: 'But I know; there is a servant in it who has fled from his Lord. By Allah, it will not sail until you throw him [overboard].' They said: 'As for you, by Allah, O Prophet of Allah, we will not throw you.' Jonah, peace be upon him, said to them: 'Draw lots, and whoever the lot falls upon, let him fall.' They drew lots, and it fell upon them..."
