Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 10 · Page 8His saying (exalted is He): '...without awaiting their readiness [for a meal], but [enter only] when you are called...'

Translation · EN

Zaynab bint Jahsh, may God be pleased with her. He invited the people, and they ate and then sat talking. It seemed as if he were preparing to stand, but they did not move. When he saw that, he stood up. When those who stood, stood, three men remained sitting. The Prophet (peace be upon him) came to enter, but the people were still sitting. Then they stood up and left. I went and informed the Prophet (peace be upon him) that they had left. He came and entered, and I went to enter, but he cast the veil between me and him, and God the Almighty revealed: 'O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet...' (1).

17754 - From Anas, may God be pleased with him, he said: I was with the Prophet (peace be upon him) and he came to the door of a woman with whom he had consummated his marriage. There were people with her, so he left and attended to his need. He returned, and they had already left, so he entered and lowered a curtain between me and him. I mentioned this to Abu Talhah, and he said: 'If it is as you say, something will surely be revealed regarding this.' Then the verse of the Hijab (veil) was revealed (2).

17755 - From Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with them both, he said: 'A man entered upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) and sat for a long time. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up multiple times hoping he would follow him and stand as well, but he did not. Then Umar, may God be pleased with him, entered and saw the man and recognized the resentment on the face of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him). He looked at the sitting man and said: "Perhaps you have annoyed the Prophet (peace be upon him)?" The man realized [the situation] and stood up. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "I had stood up multiple times hoping he would follow me, but he did not." Umar, may God be pleased with him, said: "If only you would institute a veil, for your wives are not like other women, and it is purer for their hearts." So God the Almighty revealed: 'O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet...' So he sent for Umar, may God be pleased with him, and informed him of that' (3).

17756 - My father told us, Ibn Abi Umar told me, Sufyan told us, from Mis'ar, from Musa ibn Abi Kathir, from Mujahid, from Aisha, who said: 'I was eating hais (a mixture of dates and ghee) with the Prophet (peace be upon him) in a bowl, and Umar passed by and he invited him. His finger touched my finger, and he said: "Hass (an expression of pain or surprise), or: Oh, if I were obeyed concerning you [wives], no eye would ever see you." Then the Hijab was revealed' (4).

The saying of the Almighty: 'neither waiting for its preparation, nor seeking to stay for a chat'

17757 - From Mujahid, may God be pleased with him, regarding His saying: 'neither waiting for its preparation' (ghayra nazirina inahu), he said: 'Neither waiting for its ripening/cooking, nor seeking to stay for a chat after you have eaten' (5).

17758 - From al-Dahhak, may God be pleased with him, regarding His saying: 'inahu' (its preparation), he said: 'Its ripening' (6).
