prohibition, and he did not seek to annul what had already been taken into possession. It has been said: The verse was revealed regarding Thaqif, and they had pledged to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that whatever usury they were owed by people was theirs, and whatever people owed them was waived. So when the due dates for their usury arrived, they sent to Makkah to collect, and the debts were owed by the Banu 'Abdah—who are the Banu 'Amr ibn 'Umayr from Thaqif—and they were owed by the Banu al-Mughirah al-Makhzumiyyin.
