'Uqbah, and al-Walid said to him, "Why do I see that you have shunned the Commander of the Faithful, 'Uthman?" 'Abd al-Rahman said to him, "Inform him that I did not flee on the day of Hunayn." 'Asim said: He means, "on the day of Uhud, and I did not lag behind during Badr, nor did I abandon the Sunnah of 'Umar." He said: So he went and informed 'Uthman of that. He said:

'Uthman then said: "As for his saying that he did not flee on the day of Hunayn, how can he reproach me for that when Allah has pardoned him?" The Almighty said: "Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two hosts met, only Satan caused them to slip because of some [sins] they had earned, but Allah has already forgiven them."

It is also said: So that Allah may make that a source of regret in their hearts on the Day of Resurrection, because of the humiliation and remorse they are in, and because of the bliss and honor the Muslims are in.

800: 4407: Allah described him: 1: Tafsir Ibn Kathir: (1/420).

: 4408: For them: 2: The previous source.

801: 4411: Their sins: 1: Abu Isma'il Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Tirmidhi said: Bishr ibn 'Ubayd informed us, 'Ammar ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from al-Mas'udi, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, from 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah has commanded me to be lenient with people, just as He has commanded me to establish the obligatory acts of worship."
