: 5050: That: 2: Tafsir Mujahid: (1/150).

906: 5051: A quintar (a great amount of wealth): 1: I say: This verse provides evidence for the permissibility of establishing a dowry (sadaq) with a large amount of wealth. 'Umar ibn al-Khattab had forbidden the excessive setting of dowries, but then retracted that view. As Imam Ahmad stated: Isma'il narrated to us, Salama ibn 'Alqama narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Sirin who said: It was established from Abu al-'Ajfa' al-Sulami that he said: I heard 'Umar ibn al-Khattab say: "Do not be excessive in the dowries of women, for if that were an honor in this world or a form of piety before Allah, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, would have been the most deserving of it. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, did not give any of his wives, nor did any of his daughters receive, a dowry of more than twelve uqiyahs. A man might suffer because of his wife's dowry, harboring enmity for her in his heart, even saying: 'I have burdened you with the weight of a water skin.'"

Authentic (sahih). al-Khafa' (1/316), al-Hakim (2/175), Ibn Kathir (1/467), and al-Qurtubi (3/1669).
