The root of "ittakhadhtum" (you took) is "i'takhadhtum" from the root "al-akhdh," and its measure is "ifta'altum." The second hamza was softened to avoid two hamzas, resulting in "i'takhadhtum." Then the ya shifted in derivation, becoming an alif in "yattakhidhu" and a waw in "muwattakhadh," so it was replaced with a consonant letter of the same type as what follows it, which is the ta, and it was assimilated. Then the alif of connection (wasl) was brought in for pronunciation, though it may be dispensed with when the speech implies a declaration, as in the saying of the Almighty: "Say, have you taken a covenant from Allah?" So, the alif of declaration sufficed for the alif of connection.
