The view held by the majority of jurists and scholars regarding the meaning of the verse is that it refers to one whom lack and starvation—meaning hunger—have driven to that, and this is the correct view. It is also said: Its meaning is that he was coerced and overcome into eating these forbidden things. Mujahid said: It means that he was coerced into it, like a man captured by the enemy who then force him to consume swine flesh or commit other acts of disobedience against Allah the Almighty.
