Al-Bukhari held this opinion based on his statement. It is also mentioned as a mursal report from Abu Hurayrah and from Ibn 'Abbas that he should feed a poor person.

Allah did not mention feeding; He only said: "Then an equal number of other days." It has been reported from Abu Hurayrah—may Allah be pleased with him—in a marfu' (attributed) manner regarding the person who was negligent in making up the fast of Ramadan until another Ramadan arrived: "He fasts this one with the people, and he fasts that which he was negligent in, and he feeds a poor person for every day."

Ibn al-Jawzi said: This is a fabricated (mawdu') report that has no basis.

Abu Ma'shar's name is Najih; Yahya ibn Sa'id used to weaken him, not narrate from him, and would laugh whenever he was mentioned.

Yahya ibn Ma'in said: Its chain of narration is nothing.

He also said: No one has mentioned Ramadan among the Names of Allah the Exalted, and it is not permissible to name it as such by consensus.

In the two Sahih collections, from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah from the Prophet (peace be upon him), he said: "When Ramadan arrives, the gates of Paradise are opened."
