they traveled from the dwellings of 'Ad and Thamud, and the generations that were destroyed. It was also said: It refers to Hell. This is from al-Hasan and Mujahid; meaning: Let it be a reminder to you, so beware of being among them. It was also said: He intended by it Egypt, meaning: I will show you the dwellings of the Copts and the abodes of Pharaoh devoid of them. This is from Ibn Jubayr. From Qatada: The meaning is: I will show you the dwellings of the disbelievers who lived before you from among the tyrants and the giants so that you may take a lesson from them, meaning the Levant (al-Sham).
