deeds, meaning: How can they have a covenant while 'if they gain dominance over you, they do not observe regarding you any pact or covenant' (Qur'an 9:8). It is said: 'I dominated over such-and-such person' (zahartu 'ala), meaning I overcame him; and 'I climbed the house' (zahartu al-bayt), meaning I ascended it, and from this is 'they were unable to climb it' (fama istata'u an yazzaharu), meaning to climb upon it.
