And Al-Baghawi (3/252), Al-Manthur (3/349), Bidayah (2/64), and Ibn Kathir (5/78, 278, 383, 334, 491).

  1. They succeed: 2: Ibn Kathir said in his interpretation of this verse: Meaning: those other than Allah from among the rivals and idols, you did not find anything from them; rather, they harmed you entirely.

2020: 10798. Their Lord: 1: The saying of the Almighty: "humbled themselves" (akhbatu). Ibn Abbas said: Akhbatu: they turned in repentance (anabu). Mujahid said: They obeyed. Qatadah said: They were humbled and submissive. Muqatil said: They were sincere. Al-Hasan said: Al-Ikhbat is the humility for the steadfast adherence in the heart. The root of al-ikhbat is stability, from al-khabt, which is the level, wide earth; so al-ikhbat is humility and tranquility, or the continuous turning in repentance to Allah—the Almighty—that remains on a state of stability.

2021: 10807. Peace be upon him: 1: Al-Manthur (3/94), Al-Kanz (32391), and Al-Sahihah (1289).

2022: 10811. Painful: 1: Ibn Kathir said in his interpretation of this verse: Meaning: If you persist in what you are upon, Allah will punish you with a painful, agonizing, and severe punishment in the Abode of the Hereafter.

: 10818. His book: 2: Sahih. Narrated by Al-Bukhari (4/214), Ahmad (1/441), Al-Majma' (6/117), Al-Tabari (1/13), Al-Targhib (3/419), Al-Qurtubi (4/199, 8/273, 14/156), Shifa (1/222), Mushkil (3/189), and Al-Mughni 'an Haml al-Asfar (1/313, 3/68, 283).
