Upon you: 1: Al-Qurtubi said in the interpretation of this verse: He described the day as being encompassing, and he intended to describe that day as encompassing them, for if the day of punishment encompasses them, then the punishment has encompassed them. It is like your saying: A severe day, meaning: severe in its heat. There is disagreement regarding that punishment: it is said: It is the punishment of the Fire in the Hereafter. It is also said: It is the punishment of total annihilation in this world.
It is also said: High prices; the meaning of this is narrated from Ibn Abbas.
In the hadith from the Prophet (peace be upon him): "Never do a people show deficiency in weights and measures except that Allah afflicts them with drought and high prices." Al-Qurtubi in his "Tafsir": (9/86).
