Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas said: The Quran was revealed to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he recited it to them for a period. They said: "If only you would tell us stories," so it was revealed: "We narrate unto you" [12:3]. He recited it to them for a period, and they said: "If only you would speak to us," so it was revealed: "Allah has revealed the best of narrations" [39:23].

Umar said to him: "Are you so-and-so al-'Abdi?" He said: "Yes." He said: "And are you the one dwelling in al-Sus?" He said: "Yes." So he struck him with a staff he had with him.
