It is reported that the Jews asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, about the story of Joseph, so the Surah was revealed. Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas said: The Quran was revealed to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he recited it to them for a period. They said: "If only you would tell us stories," so it was revealed: "We narrate unto you" [12:3]. He recited it to them for a period, and they said: "If only you would speak to us," so it was revealed: "Allah has revealed the best of narrations" [39:23].

Umar said to him: "Are you so-and-so al-'Abdi?" He said: "Yes." He said: "And are you the one dwelling in al-Sus?" He said: "Yes." So he struck him with a staff he had with him. The man said: "What is the matter with me, O Commander of the Faithful?" Umar said: "Sit down." So he sat, and he (Umar) recited to him: "We narrate unto you the best of stories... to... the heedless" [12:3].
