: 12438: Al-Hijr: 9: Al-Qurtubi said: Al-Hijr is applied to various meanings, among them: The Hijr of the Kaaba. And among them is the forbidden (al-haram), God the Almighty said: "And an inaccessible barrier" [Al-Furqan: 53]. And al-hijr: the intellect (al-'aql), God the Almighty said: "For one who has intellect" [Al-Fajr: 5]. And al-hijr: the lap of a shirt (hajar al-qamis), and the fatha is more eloquent. And al-hijr: the female horse. And al-hijr: the dwellings of Thamud, and this is what is intended here, i.e., the city. Al-Azhari stated this. Qatada said: It is that which is between Makkah and Tabuk, and it is the valley where the people of Thamud were.
