The majority of exegetes hold that the fish remained in the place where it entered the water, leaving a path, and that Moses walked upon it, following the trace of the fish, until the path led him to an island in the sea, where he found Al-Khidr. 2378: 12901: A farsakh: 1: Ibn Kathir said: The Exalted informs us about Moses and his companion, who is Al-Khidr: that they set off once they had agreed and accompanied one another, and he (Al-Khidr) stipulated that he should not ask him about anything he disapproved of until he himself initiated an explanation and clarification of it. So they boarded the ship, and when the ship departed with them into the sea and plunged into its depths—meaning, it entered the deep part—Al-Khidr stood up and scuttled it, removed one of its planks, and then patched it. Moses (peace be upon him) could not restrain himself from asking in disapproval: "Have you scuttled it to drown its people?" (Al-Tafsir: 3/97).
