Al-Mubarrad said: "It is said of every plant that does not have a trunk, whose leaves spread upon the ground, that it is a yaqtinah, like pumpkin, watermelon, and colocynth. If it has a trunk that supports it, it is a tree only; and if it is upright, meaning: with veins that spread, it is a najmah, and its plural is najm."
