2755: 15569: Israel: 1: People have differed regarding the meaning of this statement. Al-Suddi, al-Tabari, and al-Farra said: This statement from Moses, peace be upon him, is by way of acknowledging the favor, as if he were saying: Yes! Your raising me was a favor to me, in that you worshipped someone other than me and abandoned me, but that does not negate my messengership. It was also said: It is from Moses, peace be upon him, by way of refutation, meaning: Do you remind me of the favor that you raised me as a child while you have enslaved the Children of Israel and killed them?! Meaning: It is not a favor, because the duty was that you should not kill them nor enslave them, for they are my people; so how can you mention your kindness to me in particular? Qatadah and others expressed this meaning.

2756: 15576: Do you not listen: 1: The saying of the Almighty: "Do you not listen?" is in the sense of incitement and astonishment at the foolishness of the statement, since it was the creed of the people that Pharaoh was their lord and their worshipped deity, as were the Pharaohs before him.

2760: 15602: Learned: 1: Ibn Kathir said in the commentary on this verse: i.e., accomplished and skilled in magic. So Pharaoh spread among them that this was of the category of magic, not of the category of a miracle. Then he incited them and urged them to oppose him and disbelieve in him.

2761: 15608: Gathering: 1: Ibn Kathir said in the commentary on this verse: i.e., send him and his brother, so that you may gather for him from the cities of your kingdom and the provinces of your state every learned magician, so that they may confront him and bring the like of what he has brought, and then you will overcome him and have the victory and support. So he responded to them regarding that, and this was from Allah Almighty subjugating them.
