Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 2 · Page 107[Surat al-Baqarah (2): Verse 244]

Translation · EN

He said: On the Day of Resurrection, the people of Allah’s allegiance will be brought forward, and they will stand before Him in three categories. He said: A man from the first category will be brought, and He will say: 'My servant, why did you act?' He will say: 'O Lord, You created Paradise, its trees, fruits, rivers, pearls, and blessings, and what You prepared therein for the people of Your obedience, so I kept my nights awake and my days thirsty out of longing for it.' He will say: 'My servant, you acted solely for Paradise, so enter it. And it is from My bounty upon you that I shall free you from the Fire.' He said: So he and those with him shall enter Paradise.

He said: Then the second category will be brought. He will say: 'My servant, why did you act?' He will say: 'O Lord, You created the Fire, and You created its shackles, its blazing heat, its scorching air, its black smoke, and what You prepared therein for Your enemies and the people of Your disobedience, so I kept my nights awake and my days thirsty out of fear of it.' He will say: 'My servant, you acted solely out of fear of the Fire; I have surely freed you from the Fire, and from My bounty upon you, I shall cause you to enter My Paradise.' So he and those with him shall enter Paradise. He said: Then a man from the third category will be brought. He will say: 'My servant, why did you act?' He will say: 'My Lord, out of longing for You and love for You.' Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, will say: 'My servant, you acted solely out of love for Me and longing for Me.' The Lord, the Almighty and Majestic, will manifest Himself to him and say: 'Here I am, look at Me.'

Then He will say: 'It is from My bounty upon you that I shall free you from the Fire, permit you into My Paradise, let My angels visit you, and greet you with My own Self.' So he and those with him shall enter Paradise.

2425 - My father narrated to us, Hisham b. Khalid al-Dimashqi reported to us, Shu'ayb b. Ishaq reported to us, Sa'id reported to us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "But most of the people do not give thanks": He said: The believer truly gives thanks for the blessings of Allah upon him and upon His creation.

And from Qatadah, he said: It was mentioned to us that Abu al-Darda' used to say: 'O how many a person is thankful for another’s blessing while being blessed himself without knowing it, and O how many a bearer of jurisprudence is not a jurist.'

His saying: "And fight in the way of Allah"

2426 - Abu Zuhrah Ahmad b. al-Azhar informed us in what he wrote to me, Wahb b. Jarir reported to us, my father reported to us, from 'Ali b. al-Hakam, from al-Dahhak, regarding His saying: "Have you not seen those who left their homes while they were in the thousands": The 'thousands' (al-uluf) refers to the large number. They left fleeing from Jihad in the way of Allah, so Allah caused them to die, then He brought them back to life, then He commanded them to return to Jihad in the way of Allah, and that is His saying: "And fight in the way of Allah and know that Allah is Hearing, Knowing."

2427 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya reported to us, Ibn Lahi'ah reported to us, 'Ata' narrated to me, from Sa'id b. Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah, the Almighty and Majestic: "In the way of Allah," meaning: in the obedience of Allah.
