2458 - 'Ali b. al-Husayn narrated to us, al-Haytham b. Yaman reported to us, a man whom he named reported to us, from al-Suddi, from Abu Malik, from Ibn 'Abbas who said: "Indeed, Allah has chosen him over you and increased him in abundance"—he says: in superiority.
His saying: "In knowledge."
2459 - 'Ali b. al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad b. 'Ali b. Hamzah reported to us, 'Ali b. al-Hasan reported to us, 'Abd Allah b. al-Mubarak reported to us, some of our companions informed me, from Wahb b. Munabbih regarding "And increased him in abundance in knowledge"—he said: Knowledge of warfare.
2460 - 'Ali b. al-Husayn narrated to us, al-Haytham b. Yaman reported to us, a man whom he named reported to us, from al-Suddi, from Abu Malik, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding "And increased him in abundance in knowledge and physique"—he says: He was great and robust, excelling the Children of Israel in his neck and head.
2461 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr b. Hammad reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "And increased him in abundance in knowledge and physique"—he said: He brought a staff equivalent to the measure of the man who would be sent among them as a king, and said: "Indeed, your leader’s height will be the length of this staff." They measured themselves against it, and they were not like it. Talut was a water-carrier, carrying water on a donkey of his. His donkey went missing, so he set out looking for it on the road. When they saw him, they called him and measured him against it, and he was the same as it. Their prophet said to them: "Indeed, Allah has sent Talut to you as a king." The people said: "You have never been more of a liar than you are this hour; we are from the tribe of the monarchy, and he is not from the tribe of the monarchy, and he has not been given an abundance of wealth so that we might follow him for that." The prophet said: "Indeed, Allah has chosen him over you and increased him in abundance in knowledge and physique."
2462 - Muhammad b. Hammad al-Tahrani reported to us in what he wrote to me, Isma'il b. 'Abd al-Karim al-San'ani informed me, from 'Abd al-Samad b. Ma'qil, he said: I heard Wahb say regarding "And increased him in abundance in knowledge and physique"—he said: The Children of Israel gathered, and Talut was taller than them from his shoulder upwards.
2463 - Muhammad b. al-'Abbas narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman b. Salamah reported to us, from Ibn Ishaq who said: Talut was a man who had been given an abundance in physique, strength in striking, and intensity in war, and he was known for that among the people.
