Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 2 · Page 116His saying (the Exalted): 'Containing tranquility from your Lord'

Translation · EN

2471 - Muhammad b. al-'Abbas narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman b. Salamah reported to us, Salamah reported to us, from Ibn Ishaq regarding "that the Ark will come to you"—he said: It will be returned to you, and what it contains of tranquility (Sakina), and of the remainder of what the family of Moses and the family of Aaron left behind. It is that with which you will defeat those you encounter of the enemy who seized the Ark, below the mountain—the mountain of Iliya (Elijah)—between them and Egypt, and they were worshippers of idols.

His saying, the Almighty: "In it is tranquility from your Lord."

[The First Aspect]

2472 - Yunus b. Habib narrated to us, Abu Dawud reported to us, Shu'bah reported to us, from Abu Ishaq, who said: I heard al-Bara' say: While a man was reciting Surat al-Kahf one night, his mount began to jump, or he said: His horse began to jump. He looked, and behold, there was something like a mist or a cloud. This was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and he said: "That is the tranquility that descended for the Qur'an," or "that descended due to the Qur'an."

2473 - My father narrated to us, 'Abdah b. Sulayman reported to us, Ibn al-Mubarak reported to us, Yahya b. Ayyub reported to us, from 'Ubayd Allah b. Zahr, from Sa'd b. Mas'ud, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was in a gathering, then he raised his gaze to the sky, then he lowered his gaze, then he raised it again. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was asked, and he said: "These people were remembering Allah"—meaning the people in the gathering before him—"so the tranquility descended upon them, carried by the angels like a canopy. When it drew near to them, a man spoke falsehood, so it was raised away from them."

2474 - Muhammad b. 'Abd Allah b. Yazid al-Muqri' narrated to us, Sufyan reported to us, from Mis'ar, from Salamah b. Kuhayl, from Abu al-Ahwas, from 'Ali, who said: The Sakina has a face like the face of a human, and it is also a gentle breeze.

2475 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab reported to us, Bishr informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "In it is tranquility from your Lord"—he said: The Sakina is a creature the size of a cat, which has two eyes that have radiance. When the two armies met, it would extend its hands and look at them, and the army would be defeated by that, out of fear.
