Abban reported to us, from 'Ikrimah, the client of Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep," that Musa, peace and blessings be upon him, asked the angels: "Does Allah sleep?" So Allah revealed to the angels and commanded them to keep him awake for three [days/nights] and not let him sleep, and they did so. Then they gave him two vials and he held them, then they left him and warned him not to break them. He said: So he began to doze while they were in his hands, one in each hand. He would doze and wake up, doze and wake up, until he fell into a doze and struck one against the other, and broke them. Ma'mar said: It is merely a parable that Allah struck; Allah is saying: "And thus are the heavens and the earth in His hands."
