"There is no compulsion in the religion." He said: The Arabs had no religion, so they were compelled into the religion by the sword. He said: And the Jews, the Christians, and the Magians are not to be compelled if they pay the Jizya (tribute).

The fifth interpretation:

2613 - My father narrated to us, Abu al-Walid reported to us, Abu Sa'id al-Sarraj reported to us, saying: I heard al-Hasan, and a man asked him, saying: "My slave does not pray; should I beat him?" He replied: "There is no compulsion in the religion."

The sixth interpretation:

I read to Muhammad b. al-Fadl b. Musa, Muhammad b. 'Ali b. al-Hasan b. Shaqiq reported to us, Muhammad b. Muzahim reported to us, from Bukayr b. Ma'ruf, from Muqatil b. Hayyan regarding His saying: "There is no compulsion in the religion." He says: Do not compel anyone to enter Islam. Whoever wishes may become Muslim, and whoever wishes may pay the Jizya.

The seventh interpretation:

That it is abrogated.

2614 - 'Ali b. al-Hasan narrated to us, Musaddad reported to us, Khalid reported to us, Husayn b. Qays reported to us, from 'Ikrimah regarding His saying: "There is no compulsion in the religion." He says: Do not compel anyone to enter Islam. Whoever wishes may become Muslim, and whoever wishes may pay the Jizya.

2615 - 'Ali b. al-Hasan narrated to us, Musaddad reported to us, Khalid reported to us, Husayn b. Qays reported to us, from 'Ikrimah regarding His saying: "There is no compulsion in the religion." He said: It was abrogated by the one that follows it: "And they said, 'We hear and we obey.'"

It is narrated from al-Suddi that it is abrogated, as fighting was commanded in Surah Bara'ah.

2616 - My father narrated to us, al-Harith b. Labid reported to us, Baqiyyah reported to us, from 'Utbah b. Abi Hakim, who said: We went on an expedition to the land of the Byzantines, and with us were Raja' b. Haywah and Sulayman b. Musa. With Raja' was a Christian servant of his who had reached the age of puberty. Sulayman b. Musa said to him: "O Abu al-Miqdam, is he a Muslim?" He said: "No." I said: "Will you not compel him?" He replied: "Does Allah not say: 'There is no compulsion in the religion'?" He said to him: "It is abrogated." He asked him: "What abrogated it?" He said: "His saying: 'O Prophet, fight the disbelievers.'"
