His saying: "Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah, then do not follow up what they have spent with reminders [of their generosity] or [other] injury."

2732 - Al-Hasan b. Ahmad narrated to us, Musa b. Muhallim reported to us, 'Abd al-Kabir b. 'Abd al-Majid reported to us, 'Abbad b. Mansur reported: I asked al-Hasan about His saying: "Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah, then do not follow up what they have spent with reminders [of their generosity] or [other] injury." He said: "There are people who send a man from among them in the way of Allah, or spend on a man and give him the provision, then they remind him [of it] and hurt him. Their 'reminder' of what they spent is when he says: 'I spent such and such in the way of Allah,' as a reminder, without counting it [sincerely] with Allah. And 'injury' is that he hurts the man to whom he gave his wealth and says: 'Did I not give you such and such from my wealth? Did I not spend such and such on you?' He reminds him of it, and the injury is that he hurts him. That is [included in] the speech regarding him, since Allah said: 'Those who spend their wealth.'"

2733 - Musa b. Harun al-Tusi informed us, in what he wrote to me: Al-Husayn b. Muhammad al-Marrudhi informed us, Shayban b. 'Abd al-Rahman reported to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Then do not follow up what they have spent with reminders [of their generosity] or [other] injury," he said: "Allah knew that people would remind [others] of their giving, so Allah disliked that."

His saying, the Exalted: "Kind speech and forgiveness are better than charity followed by injury."

2734 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Nufayl reported to us, he said: I read to Ma'qil b. 'Ubayd Allah, from 'Amr b. Dinar, he said: It has reached us that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "There is no charity more beloved to Allah than a charity [given] with kind speech. Have you not heard His saying: 'Kind speech and forgiveness are better than charity followed by injury'?"

2735 - Al-Hasan b. Ahmad narrated to us, Ishaq b. Isma'il reported to us, Yazid reported to us, Sa'id reported to us, from Qatadah, he said: "Allah knew that people would remind others of their gift, so He disliked that and forbade it, and said: 'Kind speech and forgiveness are better than charity followed by injury. And Allah is Free of need, Forbearing.'"

2736 - Abu Sa'id b. Yahya b. Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us, al-'Anqazi reported to us, from Asbat, from al-Suddi, from 'Adi b. Thabit, from al-Bara': "And Allah is free of need from your charities."
