His saying, the Exalted: "Forbearing."

2737 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih reported to us, Mu'awiyah b. Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali b. Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas: "Allah informed His servants of His forbearance, His tenderness, His generosity, the vastness of His mercy, and His forgiveness."

His saying, the Exalted: "O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders [of your generosity] or [other] injury."

2738 - Al-Hasan b. al-Minhal narrated to us, Muhammad b. 'Abd Allah b. 'Ammar al-Mawsili reported to us, 'Attab reported to us, from Khusayf, from Mujahid, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: "A persistent drinker of intoxicants, one who is undutiful to his parents, and one who reminds [people of his gifts] (mannan) will not enter Paradise." Ibn 'Abbas said: "That troubled me because Muslims do commit sins, until I found in the Book of Allah regarding the 'mannan': 'Do not invalidate your charities with reminders [of your generosity] or [other] injury.'"

2739 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr b. Hammad reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "Do not invalidate your charities with reminders [of your generosity] or [other] injury," he said: "So it becomes invalidated just as the charity of showing off was invalidated."

2740 - Musa b. Harun al-Tusi informed us, in what he wrote to me, al-Husayn b. Muhammad al-Marrudhi reported to us, Shayban reported to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Do not invalidate your charities," he said: "Allah disliked that for the believers and forbade it."

His saying: "With reminders [of your generosity]."

2741 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Safwan reported to us, al-Walid reported to us, Bukayr b. Ma'ruf informed me, from Muqatil b. Hayyan regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted: "Do not invalidate your charities with reminders [of your generosity] or [other] injury," he said: "It is the man who reminds [others] of his charity."

His saying, the Exalted: "Or [other] injury."

2742 - And through the same chain from Muqatil b. Hayyan regarding the saying of Allah: "With reminders [of your generosity] or [other] injury," he said: "He hurts the one to whom he gives charity."

His saying, the Exalted: "Like him who spends his wealth to be seen by the people."

2743 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr b. Hammad reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "Like him who spends his wealth to be seen by the people." He said: "Likewise, this one who spends his wealth to be seen by the people—showing off has carried away his spending, just as the rain has carried away the soil of this smooth rock [safwan]."(1)
