...there is something in my heart regarding it, O Commander of the Faithful. 'Umar said: 'O nephew, speak and do not belittle yourself.' Ibn 'Abbas said: 'It was set forth as a parable for a deed.' 'Umar said: 'What deed?' Ibn 'Abbas said: 'For a deed.' 'Umar said: 'For a rich man who acts in obedience to Allah, then Allah sends the devil to him, so he acts in disobedience until his deeds are drowned.'
2774 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Safwan reported to us, al-Walid reported to us, Shu'ayb b. Ruzi' reported to us, from 'Ata' al-Khurasani, from 'Ikrimah, regarding: "Would one of you like that he should have a garden of palm trees and grapevines," he said: This is a parable for a man who acts with faith and performs good deeds, gives charity, and spends, until when he is at the end of his deeds and the arrival of his appointed time, he associates partners with Allah and commits one of the major sins, so Allah renders his deeds void, and he is a disbeliever.
2775 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr b. Hammad reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi, regarding: "Would one of you like that he should have a garden of palm trees and grapevines, with rivers flowing beneath it, having in it for him of all kinds of fruits," he said: This is another parable for the spending of one who shows off. He spends his wealth while showing off to the people, so his wealth departs from him while he is showing off, and Allah does not reward him for it. Then when the Day of Resurrection arrives and he is in need of his spending, he finds that showing off has burned it, so it is gone just as this man spent [on] his garden.
His saying: "Having in it for him of all kinds of fruits."
2776 - Muhammad b. Hammad al-Tahrani narrated to us, Hafs b. 'Umar al-'Adani informed us, al-Hakam b. Aban reported to us, from 'Ikrimah, regarding His saying: "Having in it for him of all kinds of fruits," he said: There is no tree in the world except that it is in Paradise, even the colocynth.
His saying: "...and he is struck by old age, and he has weak offspring."
2777 - My father narrated to me, 'Ali b. Muhammad al-Tanafisi reported to us, Yahya b. Adam reported to us, from Sharik, from 'Abd al-Malik, from 'Ata', from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding: "And he has weak offspring," he said: It is a parable that was set forth.
2778 - Muhammad b. Sa'd al-'Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my uncle al-Husayn reported to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: Allah set forth a good parable, and all of His parables are good. He said: "Would one of you like that he should have a garden of palm trees and grapevines, with rivers flowing beneath it, having in it for him of all kinds of fruits," he says: He produced it in his youth, then old age struck him, and his children and offspring were too weak at...
