the end of his life, so a whirlwind containing fire came upon him and his orchard burned. He did not have the strength to replant its like, and there was no goodness in his offspring that could return to him. Likewise, the disbeliever on the Day of Resurrection, when he is returned to Allah, has no goodness [to offer] so that he may be pardoned, just as this man has no strength to replant the like of his orchard. He finds that he did not advance any goodness for himself that would return to him, just as this [man's garden] did not avail him anything before his children. He was deprived of its reward when he was in the greatest need of it, just as this [man] was deprived of Allah’s garden when he was in the greatest need of it, at the time of his old age and the weakness of his offspring. It is a parable Allah set forth for the believer and the disbeliever regarding what they were given in the world: how the believer is saved in the Hereafter and has merit and bliss stored for him, while wealth was withheld from him in the world; and how the disbeliever was given abundance of wealth in the world, which is severed for him in favor of the evil that shall never depart from him, abiding therein in humiliation, because he boasted over his companion, trusted in what he possessed, and did not become certain that he was going to meet his Lord.
[His saying, the Exalted: "And it was struck by a whirlwind"]
[The first view]
2779 - My father narrated to me, Qabisah reported to us, Sufyan reported to us, from Harun b. 'Antarah, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Whirlwind (i'sar)," he said: A wind.
It was narrated from al-Suddi and al-Rabi' b. Anas similar to that.
And the second view:
2780 - al-Hasan b. Abi al-Rabi' informed us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ma'mar informed us, he said: al-Hasan used to say regarding: "And it was struck by a whirlwind (i'sar)," he says: Intense cold (sir).
His saying: "containing fire"
2781 - My father narrated to us, Qabisah reported to us, Sufyan reported to us, from Harun b. 'Antarah, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "containing fire," he said: A wind in which there is an intense scorching heat (samum). It was narrated from al-Suddi, Mujahid, and al-Rabi' b. Anas similar to that.
His saying, the Exalted: "...and it was burned"
[The first view]
2782 - al-Hasan b. Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ma'mar informed us, from al-Hasan, regarding His saying: "...and it was burned," he said: It departed when he was in the greatest need of it. That is why He says: "Would one of you like that his deeds would depart when he is in the greatest need of them?"
