Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to him: "The sale has profited, O Abu Yahya. The sale has profited, O Abu Yahya. The sale has profited, O Abu Yahya." He then recited the Quran to him, meaning His saying: "And of the people is he who sells his soul, seeking the pleasure of Allah. And Allah is Compassionate to the servants." It was also narrated from Abu al-'Aliyah and al-Rabi' b. Anas something similar.

1940 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu Ahmad Muhammad b. 'Abd Allah b. al-Zubayr narrated to us, from Isra'il, from Tariq b. 'Abd al-Rahman, from Qays b. Abi Hazim, from al-Mughirah b. Shu'bah, who said: We were on a military expedition, and a man advanced and fought until he was killed. They said: "He has cast himself with his own hands into destruction." It was written about him to 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, and 'Umar wrote back: "It is not as they said; he is among those regarding whom Allah said: 'And of the people is he who sells his soul, seeking the pleasure of Allah.'"

Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "And of the people is he who sells his soul, seeking the pleasure of Allah," i.e., they sold their souls to Allah through Jihad in His cause and by fulfilling His rights, until they perished in doing so, meaning: the military detachment (al-sariyyah).

The third view:

1942 - Al-Hasan b. Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar informed us, from Qatadah, regarding the saying: "And of the people is he who sells his soul, seeking the pleasure of Allah," he said: "They are the Muhajirun and the Ansar."

His saying: "And Allah is Compassionate to the servants"

1943 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya b. Lahi'ah narrated to us, 'Ata' narrated to me, from Sa'id b. Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah: "And Allah is Compassionate to the servants," meaning: He is compassionate to you.

His saying: "O you who have believed"

1944 - 'Ali b. al-Husayn narrated to us, Ahmad b. al-Sabbah b. Abi Surayj narrated to us, al-Haytham b. Yaman informed me, Isma'il b. Zakariyya narrated to us, Muhammad b. 'Awn narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "O you who have believed, enter into submission (al-silm) completely," he recited it with a fathah (al-silm) (in the accusative case).
