His saying: "And whatever you spend of expenditures or make of vows, indeed Allah knows it."

2841 - Hajjaj b. Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah reported to us, Warqa' reported to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "And whatever you spend of expenditures or make of vows, indeed Allah knows it and enumerates it."

His saying, the Almighty: "And there will be for the wrongdoers no helpers."

2842 - 'Ammar b. Khalid narrated to us, Ishaq b. Yusuf al-Azraq reported to us, from Mis'ar, from Ma'n b. 'Abd al-Rahman, from Shurayh, he said: The wrongdoer awaits punishment, and the oppressed awaits victory.

His saying, the Almighty: "If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good."

[The first interpretation]

It was mentioned from Muhammad b. Shu'ayb b. Shabur, 'Uthman b. Abi al-'Atikah informed me, from 'Ali b. Yazid, from al-Qasim, from Abu Umamah, from Abu Dharr, he said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is the charity?" He said: "[It is] multiples upon multiples, and with Allah is increase." Then he cited(1) this verse: "If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good."(2)

2843 - Muhammad b. Sa'd al-'Awfi reported to us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my uncle al-Husayn narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, from 'Abd Allah b. 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good. But if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you." This was practiced before [Bara'ah] was revealed. Then, when Bara'ah was revealed with the obligatory charities and their merit, the charities ended with them.

It was reported from Muqatil b. Hayyan that it is abrogated.

[The second interpretation]

2844 - Muhammad b. Hammad al-Tahrani reported to us in what he wrote to me, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us. A man reported to us, from 'Ammar al-Duhni, from Abu Ja'far, regarding His saying: "If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good," he means: The obligatory Zakat.

Notes

(1). Meaning, he cited it as evidence. (2). Ahmad 5/265.
