Translation · EN

Meaning: The believers among the People of the Scripture, for they, along with their belief in Allah, were holding fast to some of the commandments of the Torah and the laws that were revealed concerning them.

It is narrated from Muqatil b. Hayyan that he said: "'Abd Allah b. Salam and the believers of the People of the Scripture."

His saying: "Enter into submission (al-silm)"

[The first view]

1945 - 'Ali b. al-Husayn narrated to us, Ahmad b. al-Sabbah narrated to us, al-Haytham b. Yaman informed me, Isma'il b. Zakariyya narrated to us, Muhammad b. 'Awn narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, said: "Enter into submission (al-silm) completely," meaning: Enter into the laws of the religion of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and do not abandon any part of them, and your faith in the Torah and what is in it shall suffice you.

1946 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab narrated to us, Bishr b. 'Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Enter into submission (al-silm) completely," he said: "Al-silm is obedience."

It was also narrated from Abu al-'Aliyah and al-Rabi' b. Anas something similar.

1947 - Muhammad b. Sa'd al-'Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my paternal uncle al-Husayn narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "O you who have believed, enter into submission (al-silm) completely," he said: "Al-silm is Islam." Similar views were narrated from 'Ikrimah, one of the two views of Mujahid, al-Suddi, al-Dahhak, Tawus, and one of the two views of Qatadah.

1948 - My father narrated to us, 'Isa b. Abi Fatimah narrated to us, Sufyan b. 'Uyaynah narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "Enter into submission (al-silm) completely," he said: "[Enter] into all types of righteousness."

The second view:

1949 - 'Ubayd Allah b. Isma'il al-Baghdadi narrated to us, Khalaf b. Hisham al-Muqri' narrated to us, al-Khaffaf narrated to us, he said: Sa'id said: Qatadah said: "Regarding 'al-silm,' meaning: peaceful reconciliation (al-muwada'ah)."

His saying: "Completely"

1950 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab narrated to us, Bishr b. 'Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Enter into submission (al-silm) completely," he said: "Altogether."

It was also narrated from al-Dahhak, Abu al-'Aliyah, al-Rabi', 'Ikrimah, Qatadah, al-Suddi, and Muqatil b. Hayyan something similar.
