from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak: "And those who are firm in knowledge say: 'We believe in it, we act upon its clear [verses] and we believe in its ambiguous [verses], but we do not act upon it'", meaning: the ambiguous.
His saying, the Exalted: "All of it is from our Lord"
3217 - Muhammad b. Sa'd al-'Awfi informed me by what he wrote to me: My father told me: My uncle al-Husayn told me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding "They say: 'We believe in it, all of it is from our Lord'"—we believe in the clear and we hold it as our creed, and we believe in the ambiguous and we do not hold it as our creed, yet all of it is from Allah. "And none will be reminded except those of understanding."
3218 - My father narrated to us, al-Hasan b. al-Rabi' reported to us, Ibn Idris reported to us, Muhammad b. Ishaq reported to us regarding "All of it is from our Lord"—he said: They referred the ambiguous to the clear and said: "All of it is from our Lord," so how could there be disagreement in it, when it only came to confirm one part with the other.
[His saying, the Exalted: "And none will be reminded except those of understanding"]
3219 - Muhammad b. Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan reported to us, Salamah reported to us, he said: Muhammad b. Ishaq said: Then they referred—meaning: those who are firm in knowledge—the interpretation of the ambiguous to what they understood of the interpretation of the clear [verses] which have only one interpretation for everyone. By their words, the Book became coherent and confirmed one part with the other; the argument became effective through it, the decree appeared, falsehood vanished, and disbelief was defeated. Allah, the Exalted, says: "And none will be reminded in such [verses] except those of understanding."
3220 - I read to Muhammad b. al-Fadl (b. Musa), Muhammad b. 'Ali reported to us, Muhammad b. Muzahim reported to us, from Bukayr b. Ma'ruf, from Muqatil b. Hayyan regarding His saying: "And none will be reminded except those of understanding," meaning: none but every person of intellect.
His saying, the Exalted: "Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us"
3221 - Muhammad b. Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan reported to us, Salamah reported to us, he said: Muhammad b. Ishaq said: "Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate," meaning: do not incline our hearts [away from truth], even if we were to incline [toward error] by our own innovative deeds.
His saying, the Exalted: "And grant us from Yourself mercy"
3222 - 'Amr b. 'Abd Allah al-Awdi narrated to us, Waki' reported to us, from 'Abd al-Hamid b. Bahram
(1). The author does not usually mention "b. Musa", and [the one meant by] al-Darraj is Muhammad b. al-Fadl.
