Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 2 · Page 277His saying (the Exalted): 'And whoever does that'

Translation · EN

3376 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr b. Hammad reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi regarding his saying: "Let not the believers take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers." As for "allies," it means he takes them as allies in their religion and reveals to them the vulnerable points of the believers.

3377 - Muhammad b. Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah reported to us, who said: Muhammad b. Ishaq said: Muhammad b. Abi Muhammad said: Al-Hajjaj b. 'Amr, Ibn Abi al-Huqayq, and Qays b. Zayd had associated closely with a group of the Ansar to tempt them away from their religion. Rifa'ah b. al-Mundhir, 'Abd Allah b. Jubayr, and Sa'd b. Khaythamah said to those people: "Avoid these people from the Jews and beware of associating with them, lest they tempt you away from your religion." But those people refused, so Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed regarding them: "Let not the believers take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers," until His saying: "And Allah is powerful over all things."

His saying, the Exalted: "And whoever does that"

3378 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr b. Hammad reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi regarding "And whoever does that," he said: Whoever does this is a polytheist.

His saying, the Exalted: "Then he has nothing of Allah"

3379 - And through the same chain from al-Suddi regarding "Then he has nothing of Allah," he said: Allah has disowned him.

His saying, the Exalted: "Except that you protect yourselves from them as a precaution"

[The First Aspect]

3380 - Muhammad b. Hammad al-Tahrani narrated to us, Hafs b. 'Umar al-'Adani informed us, al-Hakam b. Aban reported to us, from 'Ikrimah regarding His saying: "Except that you protect yourselves from them as a precaution," as long as he does not shed the blood of a Muslim and does not deem his property lawful.

3381 - Muhammad b. Sa'd al-'Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my uncle al-Husayn narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Except that you protect yourselves from them as a precaution," [he said]: The 'taqiyyah' (precaution) is with the tongue. Whoever is coerced into saying something that is an act of disobedience to Allah, and he speaks it due to fear of people while his heart is at peace with faith, then that does not harm him. Indeed, 'taqiyyah' is only with the tongue.

3382 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu Usamah reported to us, who said: al-Thawri said: Ibn 'Abbas said: "Taqiyyah is not in action; rather, taqiyyah is in speech."
