Volume 2 · Page 285His saying, the Exalted: 'And Allah is most knowing of what she delivered'

Translation · EN

3425 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr b. Hammad reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi, regarding "But when she delivered her," he said: When she delivered, behold, it was a female. She said, apologizing to Allah: "My Lord, indeed I have delivered a female."

3426 - al-Hasan b. al-Sakan al-Basri narrated to us, Abu Zayd al-Nahwi reported to us, Qays reported to us, from Ibn Abi Layla, from al-Minhal, from Sa'id b. Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding the saying of Allah, the Exalted: "But when she delivered her, she said, 'My Lord, indeed I have delivered a female,'" and she had hoped it would be a male.

3427 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad b. 'Abd al-Rahman reported to us, 'Abd Allah b. Abi Ja'far reported to us, from his father, from al-Rabi', he said: She said, "My Lord, indeed I have delivered a female," meaning that the woman is not capable of that [serving the temple].

3428 - My father narrated to us, Ibrahim b. Musa reported to us, Hisham b. Yusuf reported to us, from Ibn Jurayj, al-Qasim b. Abi Bazzah informed me, that 'Ikrimah said: "But when she delivered her, she said, 'My Lord, indeed I have delivered a female,'" she said: There is no one in the temple except the man, so it is not appropriate for a woman to be with the men. Her mother was saying that; so that was what prevented her from placing her in the temple and fulfilling her vow of consecrating her in the temple.

His saying, the Exalted: "And Allah is most knowing of what she delivered."

3429 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr b. Hammad reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi, he says: Allah says: "And Allah is most knowing of what she delivered."

3430 - 'Ali b. al-Husayn narrated to us, Musa b. Harun reported to us, Marwan reported to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak, "But when she delivered her," and she saw that it was a female, she said: "Indeed I have delivered a female, and You are most knowing of what I delivered," meaning with the damma (vowel) on the 'ta'.

His saying, the Exalted: "And the male is not like the female. And I have named her Maryam."

3431 - 'Ali b. al-Husayn narrated to us, Musa b. Harun reported to us, Marwan reported to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak, "And the male is not like the female," meaning: because she had made her a vowed servant to Him, and the vowed servant is to worship Allah, because the male is stronger for that than the female.
