2001 - 'Ali b. al-Husayn narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abi al-Ghimr narrated to us, Mufaddal narrated to us, he said: I asked Abu Sakhr about His saying: "When there has not yet come to you the likeness of those who passed away before you, they were afflicted by adversity and distress." He says: "I tried them with adversity."

2002 - Abu Sa'id b. Yahya b. Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us, 'Amr b. Muhammad al-'Anqazi narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, from Murrah, from 'Abd Allah b. Mas'ud regarding His saying: "Adversity," he said: "Adversity is poverty." It has been narrated from Ibn 'Abbas, Abu al-'Aliyah, al-Hasan (in one of his two opinions), Murrah al-Hamdani, Sa'id b. Jubayr, Mujahid, al-Dahhak, Qatadah, al-Rabi' b. Anas, al-Suddi, and Muqatil b. Hayyan, the like of that.

His saying: "And distress"

2003 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah b. Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali b. Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas: "They were afflicted by adversity and distress," for distress is illness.

His saying: "And they were shaken"

And by this chain, from Ibn 'Abbas: "And they were shaken by trials and the harm people caused them."

2004 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr b. Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: "They were afflicted by adversity and distress, and they were shaken," he said: "This befell them on the day of the Confederates (al-Ahzab), until their speaker said: 'Allah and His Messenger promised us nothing but delusion.'"

His saying: "Until the Messenger and those who believed with him say, 'When is the help of Allah?' Verily, the help of Allah is near."

2005 - Musa b. Harun al-Tusi informed us in what he wrote to me, al-Husayn b. Muhammad al-Marwudhi narrated to us, Shayban b. 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Until the Messenger and those who believed with him say," he said: "The best of them, the most patient of them, and those most knowledgeable of Allah [would say]: 'When is the help of Allah?' Verily, the help of Allah is near." He said: "This is the severe trial and the hardship by which Allah tried the prophets and the believers before you, so that He might know those who obey Him from those who disobey Him."
