3456 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad b. 'Abd al-Rahman reported to us, 'Abd Allah b. Abi Ja'far reported to us, from his father, from al-Rabi' regarding His saying: "That Allah gives you glad tidings of Yahya," he said: Allah named him Yahya.
3457 - And Qatadah said: Allah only named him Yahya because Allah brought him to life through faith.
His saying, the Exalted: "Confirming a word from Allah"
3458 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Waki' reported to us, from Isra'il, from Simak, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, meaning regarding His saying: "Confirming a word from Allah," he said: 'Isa b. Maryam, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is a word from Allah, meaning he was formed by a word from Allah. Abu Muhammad said: It was narrated from Mujahid, 'Ikrimah, al-Hasan, Qatadah, al-Suddi, al-Raqashi, Jabir b. Zayd, al-Rabi' b. Anas, and al-Dahhak similarly.
His saying, the Exalted: "And a noble/chief (sayyidan)"
[The First Aspect]
3459 - Muhammad b. Sa'd al-'Awfi informed me in writing, my father reported to us, my uncle al-Husayn reported to us, my father narrated to me, from my grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And a noble (sayyidan)," he says: Forbearing, pious. Abu Muhammad said: It was narrated from al-Dahhak in one of his two sayings similar to that, and it was narrated from Abu al-'Aliyah, Sa'id b. Jubayr, al-Rabi' b. Anas, Qatadah, and Matar that they said: Forbearing only. And it was narrated from Abu Salih that he said: Pious only.
And the Second Aspect:
3460 - My father narrated to us, 'Isa b. Ziyad reported to us, Ibn al-Mubarak reported to us, Abu Bakr al-Hudhali reported to us, from 'Ikrimah regarding His saying: "And a noble (sayyidan)," he said: The noble (sayyid) is he who is not overcome by his anger.
And the Third Aspect:
3461 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Ibn Idris reported to us, from his father—I believe from 'Atiyyah—regarding His saying: "And a noble (sayyidan)," he said: The noble in his character and his religion. Abu Muhammad said: It was narrated from al-Dahhak in one of his two sayings: He said: Good of character.
