His saying, the Exalted: "But if they turn away, then indeed Allah is All-Knowing of the corrupters."

3625 - Muhammad b. Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah narrated to us, he said: Muhammad b. Ishaq said: "But if they turn away" from their disbelief.

His saying, the Exalted: "Say, O People of the Scripture."

3626 - My father narrated to us, Hisham b. 'Ammar narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, al-Dahhak narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Hawshab and others, that 'Umar b. 'Abd al-'Aziz wrote to Ailyun, the tyrant of the Romans, saying: Regarding what was revealed to Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, "Say, O People of the Scripture"—meaning the Jews and the Christians—"come to a word that is equitable between us and you."

His saying, the Exalted: "Say, O People of the Scripture, come."

3627 - My father narrated to us, Abu al-Yaman narrated to us, Shu'ayb informed me, from al-Zuhri, 'Ubayd Allah b. 'Abd Allah b. 'Utbah b. Mas'ud informed me that 'Abd Allah b. 'Abbas informed him that Abu Sufyan b. Harb informed him that Heraclius called for the letter of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and therein it said: "From Muhammad, the servant of Allah and His Messenger, to Heraclius, the leader of the Romans. Peace be upon him who follows the guidance. To proceed: I invite you with the invitation of Islam. Accept Islam, and you will be safe; Allah will grant you your reward twice. But if you turn away, then upon you is the sin of the Arisiyin. And, O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you: that we will not worship except Allah and not associate anything with Him, and that we will not take one another as lords instead of Allah. But if they turn away, then say: Bear witness that we are Muslims."

3628 - 'Ali b. al-Mubarak informed us in what he wrote to me, Zayd b. al-Mubarak narrated to us, Ibn Thawr narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, regarding His saying: "Come to a word that is equitable between us and you: that we will not worship except Allah," he said: It reached me that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, invited the Jews of Medina to that, but they refused him, so he fought them until they acknowledged the jizyah.

His saying, the Exalted: "A word."

3629 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad b. 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah b. Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, al-Rabi' b. Anas narrated to us, Abu al-'Aliyah said: The equitable word is "There is no god but Allah."
