[His saying, the Exalted: "O People of the Scripture"]
[The First Aspect]
3636 - Al-Hajjaj b. Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding "O People of the Scripture," he said: The Jews.
The Second Aspect:
3637 - Ahmad b. 'Uthman b. Hakim al-Awdi informed us in what he wrote to me, Ahmad b. al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding "O People of the Scripture, why do you argue about Abraham?" He said: The Christians said he was a Christian, and the Jews said he was a Jew. Abu Muhammad said: Something similar to this was narrated from al-Sha'bi.
His saying, the Exalted: "Why do you argue about Abraham?"
3638 - Hajjaj b. Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "O People of the Scripture, why do you argue about Abraham?" He said: The Jews and the Christians. Allah absolved him of them when each sect claimed he was one of them, and He attached to him the believers who were of the people of the Scripture, the Hunafa' (monotheists). Abu Muhammad said: Something similar to this was narrated from Abu al-'Aliyah, al-Suddi, and Qatadah.
His saying, the Exalted: "And the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed"
3639 - Al-Hasan b. Ahmad narrated to us, Musa b. Muhkam narrated to us, Abu Bakr al-Hanafi narrated to us, 'Abbad b. Mansur narrated to us, he said: I asked al-Hasan about His saying: "And the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed," he said: By Allah, the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed except upon the creed of Abraham, so why do you argue about Abraham?
His saying, the Exalted: "except after him? Then will you not reason?"
3640 - Ahmad b. 'Uthman b. Hakim al-Awdi narrated to us, Ahmad b. al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat b. Nasr narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding "And the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed except after him," he said: Judaism and Christianity came to be.
Abu Muhammad said: It was narrated from Qatadah that he said: Judaism was after the Torah, and Christianity was after the Gospel.
His saying, the Exalted: "Then will you not reason?"
3641 - Abu Zayd al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh narrated to us, he said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman b. Zayd say regarding His saying: "Then will you not reason?" He said: Then will you not reflect?

٣٦٣٦ - حَدَّثَنَا الْحَجَّاجُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ، ثنا شَبَابَةُ، ثنا وَرْقَاءُ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ قَالَ: الْيَهُودُ.
وَالْوَجْهُ الثَّانِي:
٣٦٣٧ - أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ الأَوْدِيُّ فِيمَا كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْمُفَضَّلِ، ثنا أَسْبَاطٌ، عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لِمَ تُحَاجُّونَ فِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَتِ:
النَّصَارَى كَانَ نَصْرَانِيًّا، وَقَالَتِ الْيَهُودُ كَانَ يَهُودِيًّا. قَالَ: أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ: وَرُوِيَ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ نَحْوُ ذَلِكَ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: لِمَ تُحَاجُّونَ فِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ
٣٦٣٨ - حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ، ثنا شَبَابَةُ، ثنا وَرْقَاءُ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَوْلُهُ: يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لِمَ تُحَاجُّونَ فِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى بَرَّأَهُ اللَّهُ مِنْهُمْ حِينَ ادَّعَتْ كُلُّ أُمَّةٍ أَنَّهُ مِنْهُمْ، وَأَلْحَقَ بِهِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ِمَّنْ كان من أهل الكتاب الْحَنِيفِيَّةِ. قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ: وَرُوِيَ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ وَالسُّدِّيِّ وَقَتَادَةَ نَحْوُ ذَلِكَ.
قَولُهُ تَعَالَى: وَمَا أُنْزِلَتِ التَّوْرَاةُ وَالإِنْجِيلُ
٣٦٣٩ - حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ، ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ مُحْكَمٍ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْحَنَفِيُّ ثنا عَبَّادُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ الْحَسَنَ عَنْ قَوْلِهِ: وَمَا أُنْزِلَتِ التَّوْرَاةُ وَالإِنْجِيلُ قَالَ:
وَاللَّهِ مَا أُنْزِلَتِ التَّوْرَاةُ وَالإِنْجِيلُ إِلَّا على ملة إبراهيم، ف لم تُحَاجُّونَ فِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ.
قَولُهُ تَعَالَى: إِلا مِنْ بَعْدِهِ أَفَلا تَعْقِلُونَ

قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ: وَرُوِيَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: كَانَتِ الْيَهُودِيَّةُ بَعْدَ التَّوْرَاةِ، وَكَانَتِ النَّصْرَانِيَّةُ بَعْدَ الإِنْجِيلِ.
قَولُهُ تَعَالَى: أَفَلا تَعْقِلُونَ
٣٦٤١ - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو زَيْدٍ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ فِيمَا كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ، ثنا أَصْبَغُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرحمن ابن زَيْدٍ يقول فِي قَوْلِهِ: أَفَلا تَعْقِلُونَ أَفَلا تَتَفَكَّرُونَ.
