His saying, the Exalted: "A faction of the People of the Scripture wish they could mislead you. But they do not mislead except themselves, and they perceive [it] not."
3664 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Abi 'Umar al-'Adani narrated to us, he said: Sufyan said: Everything in [Surah] Al 'Imran that mentions the People of the Scripture refers to the Christians.

His saying, the Exalted: "Why do you disbelieve?"
3665 - Al-Hasan b. Ahmad narrated to us, Musa b. Muhkam narrated to us, Abu Bakr al-Hanafi narrated to us, 'Abbad b. Mansur narrated to us, he said: I asked al-Hasan about His saying: "Why do you disbelieve?" He said: "You deny."

3666 - Ahmad b. 'Uthman b. Hakim al-Awdi narrated to us, Ahmad b. Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat b. Nasr narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "O People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the verses of Allah?" As for the verses of Allah, it is Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
And the Second Aspect
3667 - I read to Muhammad b. al-Fadl, Muhammad b. 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad b. Muzahim narrated to us, Bukayr b. Ma'ruf narrated to us, from Muqatil b. Hayyan, regarding His saying: "Why do you disbelieve in the verses of Allah?" He says: Why do you disbelieve in the proofs?
His saying, the Exalted: "And you bear witness."

3668 - Ahmad b. 'Uthman b. Hakim narrated to us, Ahmad b. Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "And you bear witness." As for "you bear witness," you testify that it is the truth, [for] they find it written with them.
3669 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad b. 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah b. Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi' b. Anas regarding His saying: "Why do you disbelieve in the verses of Allah, and you bear witness?" He says:

قَولُهُ تَعَالَى: وَدَّتْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ لَوْ يُضِلُّونَكُمْ وَمَا يُضِلُّونَ إِلا أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ
٣٦٦٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ الْعَدَنِيُّ قَالَ: قَالَ سُفْيَانُ: كُلُّ شَيْءٍ فِي آلِ عِمْرَانَ مِنْ ذِكْرِ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ فَهُوَ فِي النصارى.

٣٦٦٥ - حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ، ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ مُحْكَمٍ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْحَنَفِيُّ، ثنا عَبَّادُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ الْحَسَنَ عَنْ قَوْلِهِ: لِمَ تَكْفُرُونَ قال تجحدون.

٣٦٦٦ - حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ الأَوْدِيُّ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُفَضَّلٍ، ثنا أَسْبَاطُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ قَوْلُهُ: يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لِمَ تَكْفُرُونَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ أَمَّا آيَاتُ اللَّهِ فَمُحَمَّدٌ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.

٣٦٦٧ - قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُزَاحِمٍ، ثنا بُكَيْرُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ عَنْ مُقَاتِلِ بْنِ حَيَّانَ قَوْلُهُ: لِمَ تَكْفُرُونَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ: لِمَ تَكْفُرُونَ بِالْحُجَجِ «١» .

٣٦٦٩ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: لِمَ تَكْفُرُونَ بِآيَاتِ الله وأنتم تشهدون يقول:
