His saying, the Exalted: "Or argue with you before your Lord."

3698 - Ahmad b. 'Uthman b. Hakim narrated to us, Ahmad b. al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat b. Nasr narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding "Or argue with you before your Lord," he says: The Jews say: "Allah did such and such for us in terms of honor, until He sent down upon us the Manna and the Quail."

3699 - 'Ali b. al-Mubarak reported to me in what he wrote to me, Zayd b. al-Mubarak narrated to us, Ibn Thawr narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, regarding "Or argue with you before your Lord," he said: Some of them said to others: "Do not inform them of what Allah has clarified for you in His Book, so that they might argue with you before your Lord, and thus they would have an argument against you."

His saying, the Exalted: "Say, 'Indeed, the bounty is in the hand of Allah; He gives it to whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing, all-Knowing.'"

3700 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad b. 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah b. Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi' b. Anas, regarding His saying: "That anyone is given the like of what you have been given or argue with you," he said: He says: When Allah sent down a Book like your Book and sent a Prophet like your Prophet, you envied them for that. "Say, 'Indeed, the bounty is in the hand of Allah; He gives it to whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing, all-Knowing.'" Abu Muhammad said: Something similar to this was narrated from Qatadah.

3701 - Ahmad b. 'Uthman b. Hakim al-Awdi narrated to us, Ahmad b. Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "Indeed, the bounty is in the hand of Allah," he said: O nation of Muhammad, for indeed that which I have given you is more excellent. So say: "Indeed, the bounty is in the hand of Allah; He gives it to whom He wills."

And by way of him from al-Suddi, regarding: "He gives it to whom He wills," he said: He singles out with it whom He wills.

His saying, the Exalted: "He singles out for His mercy whom He wills."

3702 - Hajjaj b. Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding "He singles out for His mercy whom He wills," he said: Prophethood. Abu Muhammad said: Something similar to this was narrated from al-Rabi' b. Anas.
