Translation · EN

...[do not approach] prayer while you are intoxicated." Then he said: "O Allah, clarify for us [the ruling] on khamr." So there was revealed: "Indeed, khamr, maysir (gambling), ansab (stone idols), and azlam (arrows for seeking luck) [are but defilement from the work of Satan]," until it reached: "So, will you not then desist?" 'Umar then said: "We have desisted; it wastes wealth and ruins the intellect."

2045 - Al-Hasan b. Muhammad b. al-Sabah narrated to us, Hajjaj narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj and 'Uthman b. 'Ata', from 'Ata' al-Khurasani, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding his saying: "They ask you about khamr and maysir. Say, 'In them is great sin and benefits for people'"—this was abrogated by this verse: "Indeed, khamr and maysir..."

His saying, the Exalted: "Al-khamr (intoxicants)."

2046 - Yunus b. Habib narrated to us, Abu Dawud narrated to us, Muhammad b. Abi Humayd narrated to us, from al-Misri, meaning Abu Tu'mah, the reciter of Egypt, he said: I heard Ibn 'Umar saying: "Three verses were revealed regarding khamr. The first thing was: 'They ask you about khamr and maysir,' the verse. It was said: 'Khamr has been prohibited.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, let us benefit from it as Allah has said.' He remained silent regarding them. Then this verse was revealed: 'Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated.' It was said: 'Khamr has been prohibited.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we do not drink it near the time of prayer.' He remained silent regarding them. Then was revealed: 'O you who have believed, indeed, khamr, maysir, ansab, and azlam,' the verse. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Khamr has been prohibited.'"

2047 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Ibn Abi Ghaniyah narrated to us, Abu Hayyan al-Taymi reported to us, from al-Sha'bi, from 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar b. al-Khattab, he said: 'Umar stood up before me, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "Know that the prohibition of khamr was revealed on the day it was revealed from five things: from grapes, honey, dates, wheat, and barley. And khamr is that which clouds the intellect," three times.

2048 - My father narrated to us, Bishr b. Muhammad al-Sukkari narrated to us, 'Abd al-Hakam al-Qasmali narrated to us, from Anas b. Malik, he said: "We used to drink khamr, and there was revealed: 'They ask you about khamr and maysir. Say, "In them is great sin..."' We said: 'We will drink of it what benefits us.' Then it was revealed in [Surah] al-Ma'idah: 'Indeed, khamr and maysir...'
