[His saying: And benefits for the people]

[The first viewpoint]

2061 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah b. Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali b. Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas: "And benefits," he says: Regarding what they obtain of its pleasure and joy when they drink it.

The second viewpoint:

2062 - Hajjaj b. Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid(1).

His saying: "And benefits for the people." The benefits: its price and what they obtain from the slaughtered animal.

2063 - Abu Muhammad said: Ibn Abi Za'idah differed with him, from Warqa', from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, and said: Its price before it was prohibited. My father narrated that to me, Sahl b. 'Uthman narrated to us, Yahya b. Abi Za'idah narrated to us. Shibl followed Shababah and said: "From the slaughtered animal." Ibn Jurayj said the same, from Mujahid.

The third viewpoint:

2064 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya b. 'Abd Allah b. Bukayr narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, 'Ata' b. Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id b. Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah: "And benefits for the people," meaning: It is greater than their benefit, meaning: before the prohibition. So He criticized them but did not prohibit them, and the Muslims used to drink them for the benefits, and it was lawful for them on that day.

2065 - Muhammad b. Sa'd al-'Awfi reported to me, in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my paternal uncle al-Husayn narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas: "And benefits for the people," and their benefits were before the prohibition, and their sin was after they were prohibited.

His saying, the Exalted: "And their sin is greater than their benefit"

2066 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah b. Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali b. Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding his saying: "And their sin is greater than their benefit," he says: What departs from the religion, and the sin therein, is greater than what they obtain of its joy and pleasure.
