2067 - I read to Muhammad b. al-Fadl b. Musa, Muhammad b. Ali b. al-Hasan narrated to us, Muhammad b. Muzahim informed us, Bukayr b. Ma'ruf narrated to us, from Muqatil b. Hayyan, regarding His saying: "And their sin is greater than their benefit," he says: Their sin today, after the prohibition, is greater than their benefit before the prohibition.
His saying: "And they ask you what they should spend"
2068 - My father narrated to us, Musa b. Isma'il narrated to us, Aban narrated to us, Yahya narrated to us, that it reached him that Mu'adh b. Jabal and Tha'labah came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have dependents and families, so what should we spend of our wealth?" Then Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, revealed: "And they ask you what they should spend."

2069 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Hafs b. 'Umar al-Muktab and 'Uqbah b. Khalid narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Layla, from al-Hakam, from Miqsam, from Ibn 'Abbas: "And they ask you what they should spend. Say, 'The excess' (al-'afw)," he said: What is left over from your family. Abu Muhammad said: It is also narrated from 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar, Mujahid, 'Ata', al-Hasan, 'Ikrimah, Muhammad b. Ka'b, Qatadah, al-Qasim, Salim, Sa'id b. Jubayr, 'Ata' al-Khurasani, and al-Rabi' b. Anas similar to that.
The second viewpoint:
2070 - Hajjaj b. Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, regarding His saying: "And they ask you what they should spend," he said: The ease from everything, from Tawus.
The third viewpoint:
2071 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad b. 'Abd al-Rahman al-Dashtaki narrated to us, 'Abd Allah b. Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi', regarding His saying: "And they ask you what they should spend. Say, 'The excess'," he says: The wholesome part of it. He says: Your best and most wholesome wealth.
The fourth viewpoint:
2072 - Hajjaj b. Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, he said: Mujahid(1) used to say: The excess is the obligatory charity, from Qays al-Makki.
