2103 - I read to Muhammad b. al-Fadl b. Musa: Muhammad b. 'Ali b. al-Hasan narrated to us, Muhammad b. Muzahim informed us, from Bukayr b. Ma'ruf, from Muqatil b. Hayyan, regarding His saying: "And a believing slave woman is better than a polytheist," he said: It reached us—and Allah knows best—that she was a black slave woman belonging to Hudhayfah, so he emancipated her and Hudhayfah married her. He means: This verse abrogated the prohibition of marrying women of the People of the Scripture and rendered them lawful for the Muslims.
His saying: "And do not marry polytheists until they believe."
2104 - al-Hasan b. Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri and Qatadah, regarding His saying: "And do not marry polytheists until they believe," he said: It is not lawful for you to give a Jewish, Christian, or polytheistic man in marriage from outside your religion.
2105 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad b. 'Abd al-Rahman al-'Arzami narrated to us, Hafs b. Ghiyath narrated to us, from some of the Kufans, from Abu Ja'far Muhammad b. 'Ali, who said: In the Quran is a verse; whoever knows it knows it, and whoever is ignorant of it is ignorant of it: His saying: "And do not marry polytheists until they believe." Abu Muhammad said: He means that this is a foundation that marriage is not valid except with a guardian, because of the earlier address: "And do not marry [la tunkihu]"—meaning: do not give in marriage [la tuzawwiju].
His saying (the Exalted): "And a believing slave man is better than a polytheist, even if he pleases you."
2106 - My father narrated to us, Safwan b. Salih al-Dimashqi narrated to us, Marwan—meaning Ibn Mu'awiyah—narrated to us, he said: I asked Malik b. Anas about marrying a Qadari [a follower of Qadariyyah theology]? He said: No. Allah the Exalted says: "And a believing slave man is better than a polytheist, even if he pleases you."
His saying (the Exalted): "Those invite [others] to the Fire, while Allah invites to Paradise and to forgiveness, by His permission. And He makes clear His verses to the people that perhaps they may remember."
2107 - Muhammad b. Yahya narrated to us, al-Hasan b. 'Amr Bayya' al-Sabiri informed us, Yazid b. Zuray' narrated to us, Sa'id b. Abi 'Arubah narrated to us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "Those invite [others] to the Fire, while Allah invites to Paradise and to forgiveness, by His permission... that perhaps they may remember," he said: It was mentioned to us that the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) used to say: "By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, you will all enter Paradise except for those who refuse."
