2112 - Usaid b. 'Asim narrated to us, al-Husayn b. Hafs narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding this verse: "And they ask you about menstruation. Say, 'It is harm,'" he said: The blood is harm.
2113 - Al-Hasan b. Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ma'mar informed us, from Qatada regarding His saying: "And they ask you about menstruation. Say, 'It is harm,'" he said: It is filth. Abu Muhammad said: Something similar to the statement of Qatada has been narrated from al-Suddi.
His saying (the Exalted): "So keep away from wives during menstruation."
2114 - 'Abd Allah b. Ahmad narrated to us, my father narrated to me, from his father, from Ibrahim—meaning: al-Sa'igh—from Yazid al-Nahwi, from 'Ikrimah, that Ibn 'Abbas informed him that the Quran was revealed concerning the menstruating woman, as the Muslims would turn them out of their houses like the practice of the non-Arabs. Then they sought a legal ruling from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) regarding that. So the Quran came down regarding that, and Allah said to His Messenger: "And they ask you about menstruation." Allah said: "It is harm," meaning it is harm to them. "So keep away from wives during menstruation." So the believers thought that the "keeping away" was as they used to do, turning them out of their houses, until he read the end of the verse; then the believers understood what the "keeping away" was, as Allah said: "And do not approach them until they are pure."
2115 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, narrated to us, Mu'awiya b. Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali b. Abi Talha, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "So keep away from wives during menstruation," he says: Keep away from having intercourse with their private parts. Abu Muhammad said: Something similar to this has been narrated from Mujahid and Muqatil b. Hayyan.
2116 - 'Abd Allah b. Sa'id Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Ibn Yaman narrated to us, from al-Zibriqan, he said: I asked Abu Razin about His saying: "So keep away from wives during menstruation," he said: Approach them from the side of purity, and do not approach them from the side of menstruation.
His saying (the Exalted): "And do not approach them."
2117 - Muhammad b. Sa'd al-'Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my paternal uncle al-Husayn narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas: "And do not approach them until they are pure," he said: He says: When she is purified from the blood. Abu Muhammad said: Something similar to this has been narrated from 'Ikrimah, Mujahid, and al-Hasan.
