its offspring will be cross-eyed." Then Allah the Exalted revealed: "Your wives are a place of cultivation for you, so come to your place of cultivation however you wish." Ibn Jurayj said in the hadith: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Front-facing or back-facing, as long as that is in the vagina.'"

2134 - Muhammad b. 'Ubayd Allah b. Abi Dawud al-Munadi narrated to us, Yunus b. Muhammad al-Mu'addib narrated to us, Ya'qub al-Qummi narrated to us, from Ja'far b. Abi al-Mughira, from Sa'id b. Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: 'Umar came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am ruined." He asked: "What has ruined you?" He replied: "I changed my mount (the position of my wife) tonight." He did not respond to him with anything, then Allah revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): "Your wives are a place of cultivation for you, so come to your place of cultivation however you wish," meaning: "Approach from the front and the back, but avoid the anus and during menstruation."

The second interpretation:

2135 - Yunus b. 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, Ibn Wahb narrated to us, Abu Sakhr narrated to us, from Abu Mu'awiya al-Bajali—meaning 'Ammar al-Duhni—from Sa'id b. Jubayr, who said: "While Mujahid and I were sitting with Ibn 'Abbas, a man came to him, stood, and asked: 'How is it with the verse: Your wives are a place of cultivation for you, so come to your place of cultivation however you wish?' He replied: 'Woe to you! Is there any cultivation in the anus? If what you are saying were true, the prohibition of menstruation would have been abrogated; if you were busy from here, you would come from here. Rather, it means: However you wish from the night or the day.'"

The third interpretation:

2136 - Muhammad b. Isma'il al-Ahmasi narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, from Yunus b. Abi Ishaq, from Za'ida b. 'Umayr al-Ta'i, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "So come to your place of cultivation however you wish," he said: "If you wish, an Arab woman, and if you wish, a non-Arab woman."

His saying (the Exalted): "And put forth for yourselves, and fear Allah, and know that you will meet Him, and give good tidings to the believers."

[The first interpretation]

2137 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Abu Tumayla narrated to us, Abu al-Munib narrated to us, from 'Ikrimah: "And put forth for yourselves," he said: "Children."
