Translation · EN

The second interpretation:

2188 - Ahmad b. Sinan narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman b. Mahdi narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Mansur, from Ibrahim, from 'Alqamah, who said: We were with 'Umar when a woman came to him and said: "My husband separated from me by one or two [divorces], then he came to me when I had taken off my clothes and locked my door." 'Umar said to 'Abd Allah: "I consider her to be his wife, as long as it is not permissible for her to pray [i.e., she has not reached the end of her waiting period]." He said: "I hold the same view."

2189 - Hajjaj b. Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, [regarding the verse]: "Shall wait [as regards] themselves for three periods," he said: "Three menstrual cycles." Abu Muhammad said: It was reported from 'Ali, Ibn 'Abbas, Abu al-Darda' 'Ubadah b. al-Samit, Abu Musa, Sa'id b. Jubayr, al-Hasan, 'Ikrimah, al-Sha'bi, Qatadah in one of the reports, al-Rabi' b. Anas, Muqatil b. Hayyan, al-Suddi, and 'Ata' al-Khurasani, something similar to that.

His saying: "And it is not lawful for them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs"

[The first interpretation]

Those who interpreted that as pregnancy:

2190 - I read to Muhammad b. 'Abd Allah b. 'Abd al-Hakam, Ibn Wahb narrated to us, Qabath b. Razin narrated to me, from 'Ali b. Rabah, who said: There was a woman from Quraysh married to 'Umar b. al-Khattab. He divorced her with one or two divorces, and she was pregnant. When she felt the onset of labor, she locked the doors until she gave birth. 'Umar was informed of this, so he came angry, and [the following] was read to him: "Divorced women shall wait [as regards] themselves for three periods, and it is not lawful for them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs." 'Umar then said: "Verily, such-and-such [a woman] is among those who conceal what Allah has created in their wombs, and her husbands are forbidden to her for as long as she remains [as she is]."

Abu Muhammad said: It was reported from Muhammad b. Ka'b al-Qurazi, al-Suddi, al-Nakha'i in one of his two sayings, Qatadah, and Muqatil b. Hayyan, that they said: "Pregnancy."

The second interpretation: Those who interpreted it as [both] menstruation and pregnancy:

2191 - 'Ali b. al-Husayn narrated to us, Musaddad narrated to us, Yazid b. Zuray', narrated to us, Ash'ath narrated to us, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar: "And it is not lawful for them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs." He said: No.
