His saying, the Most High: "Then retention in an acceptable manner"
2208 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih the scribe of al-Layth narrated to us, Mu'awiyah b. Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali b. Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding his saying: "The divorce is twice; then retention in an acceptable manner or release with kindness," he said: When a man divorces his wife two times, he must fear Allah regarding the third divorce; so either he retains her in an acceptable manner, and treats her companionship well.
His saying: "Or release with kindness"
[The first interpretation]
2209 - And by the same chain from Ibn 'Abbas regarding his saying: "Or release with kindness," he said: That he release her with kindness, and he does not wrong her of any of her right.
2210 - Yunus b. 'Abd al-A'la informed us by way of reading, Wahb informed us, Sufyan al-Thawri informed me, Isma'il b. Sumay' narrated to me, he said: I heard Abu Razin saying: A man came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said: O Messenger of Allah, have you seen the saying of Allah: "The divorce is twice; then retention in an acceptable manner or release with kindness," where is the third? He said: The release with kindness.
The second interpretation:
2211 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr b. Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding his saying: "Or release with kindness," that he fulfills her right, does not harm her, and does not insult her.
2212 - My father narrated to us, Yahya b. 'Uthman b. Sa'id b. Kathir b. Dinar al-Himsi narrated to us, Zayd b. Abi al-Zarqa' narrated to us, from Ja'far b. Burqan, from Maymun b. Mihran, he said: Whoever performs khul' (divorce by redemption) with his wife and takes back something he gave her, I do not consider him to have released her with kindness.
His saying: "And it is not lawful for you"
2213 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad b. 'Abd al-Rahman al-Dashtaki narrated to us, 'Abd Allah b. Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi', regarding his saying: "And it is not lawful for you," he says: It is not proper for him to take from her more than what he had bestowed upon her.
His saying, the Most High: "And it is not lawful for you to take of what you have given them anything"
2214 - al-Hasan b. Muhammad b. al-Sabbah narrated to us, Hajjaj narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj and 'Uthman b. 'Ata', from 'Ata', from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding his saying: "And it is not lawful for you to take of what you have given them anything," then he made an exception and said: "There is no blame upon them in that which she redeems herself with."
