propose to her. By Allah, I will not give her to you in marriage. So Allah the Most High revealed: "And when you divorce women and they fulfill their term, do not prevent them from remarrying their husbands." He then said: Now I do so, O Lord; now I do so, O Lord.
2255 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab narrated to us, Bishr b. 'Umarah reported to us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Do not prevent them," he says: Do not forbid them; do not hold them back. He said: A man in the Jahiliyyah, if he had a female relative over whom he had the closest proximity, would cast his garment over her. She would then not be married to anyone else except with his permission. So he would prevent her by that from marriage. That is the "'adl" (preventing), and it is the statement of Allah: "Do not prevent them," meaning: Do not forbid them.
His saying, the Most High: "If they agree among themselves on an acceptable basis"
2256 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, 'Ubayd Allah narrated to us, from Isra'il, from al-Suddi, from Abu Malik: "If they agree among themselves on an acceptable basis," he said: When she is satisfied with the dowry.
2257 - I read to Muhammad b. al-Fadl, Muhammad b. 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad b. Muzahim narrated to us, from Bukayr b. Ma'ruf, from Muqatil b. Hayyan, regarding His saying: "If they agree among themselves on an acceptable basis," meaning: with a dowry, evidence, and a new marriage contract.
2258 - My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz b. Munib narrated to us, Abu Mu'adh narrated to us, from 'Ubayd, from Ibn Sulayman, from al-Dahhak: "If they agree among themselves on an acceptable basis," when the woman is satisfied and desires to return to her husband with a new marriage contract.
His saying, the Most High: "That is instructed to whoever among you believes in Allah and the Last Day. That is more virtuous for you and purer"
2259 - 'Ali b. al-Husayn narrated to us, Musa b. Harun al-Dulabi narrated to us, Marwan narrated to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak, regarding His saying: "That is more virtuous for you and purer," He commanded the woman's guardian not to hold her back and not to prevent her if she desires to return to her husband.
His saying, the Most High: "And Allah knows, while you do not know"
2260 - And by the same chain from al-Dahhak regarding the statement of Allah: "And Allah knows, while you do not know," He knows the longing of each one of them for the other, which you do not know.
